DOHA: Over QR16m was collected in a fund-raising live TV program organised by Qatar Charity (QC) on Friday in collaboration with Qatar TV under a campaign to implement development projects in Gaza.

The campaign “Gaza, the Right to Live” helped collect over QR16m during a live TV program to support health and education sectors and to implement income generation projects and those related to provision of water and health services and many other social projects, Qatar Charity has tweeted.

“Eid Charity donated over QR7.6m to Qatar Charity under the campaign. And Nasser Bin Khaled Al Thani Charitable Foundation (NBK Charity) donated QR73,000 to support the university students in Gaza,” said QC in another post.

Prominent philanthropists were invited in the fund-raising program to encourage donors to join the campaign by describing the situation of the residents of Gaza.

Speaking at the program, Nasir Al Mughaisib, Director of Relief and International Partnership Department at the Qatar Charity said that according to statistics of UN and other international human rights organisations more than 56 percent Gazans are suffering from server shortage of food supply.

“Over 50 percent workforce is unemployed due to unjust blockade. About 80 percent people in Gaza are living below the poverty line. During past 10 years, the economic and social development of Gaza has deteriorated drastically,” said Al Mughaisib.

Mohamad Abu Hallub, Director of QC office in Gaza joined the program on telephone.

He said Gaza is the most densely populated area in the world with 5,000 people residing per square km. “According to international statistics per capital daily income is QR7 and many have zero income,” he added. Dr Abdurrahman Al Harami, a well-know personality in charity work said that Qatar is standing with Gaza. “Now we are talking that Gazans deserve life with dignity. Today we stand with Gaza at their tough time”, he added.

According to Qatar Charity, the campaign “Gaza, the Right to Live” is aimed at implementing various development projects at a cost of nearly QR22m. Over 77,500 needy Gazans are expected to benefit from the projects.

The joint campaign was launched under the supervision of the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities (RACA). The fund will be used in creating educational opportunities, vocational training for the hearing impairment, offering assistance to university students, repairing the houses of the poor, providing adequate and safe lighting to them.

The projects will also help providing fuel to the generators of health centers, fitting prosthetic limbs for the disabled, providing transportation for the treatment of patients with renal failure, rehabilitating sewage plants and providing farms to poor families.
