QSW-2021 to promote green events in hospitality sector

Doha: Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW) 2021 will focus especially on promoting eco-friendly events and sustainability in hospitality sector. The week-long national campaign will be organised by Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) from October 23 to 30, 2021.

“Under QSV 2021, QGBC in coordination with authorities concerned, will hold workshop to educate hotels and other hospitality sector to adopt eco-friendly practices,” said QGBC Director, Eng Meshal Al Shamari. 

He said that QGBC is promoting eco-friendly event which mitigates the negative impact on the environment and limits the depletion of natural resources, while increasing the economic efficiency in coherence with social wellbeing.

“We adopted a system for evaluation eco-friendly events and working on a number of projects,” said Al Shammari while speaking in a Qatar TV programme. To create a culture of sustainability in hospitality sector, he said, hotels are being issued Green Key certifications for their suitability practices.

“A total of 12 hotels operating in Qatar received Green Key certifications. The Green Key, an international initiative, required a number of things from hotels like applying energy efficient electric system, lighting, regulating temperature, waste management inside the hotels and many more,” said Al Shammari.

Following COVID-19 preventive and precautionary measures, he said, QSW-2021 events will be held online and in-person with the participation of public and private sectors to promote healthy lifestyle, sport exercise and healthy foods.

“QGBC will hold workshop on future cities. Events will be also held in coordination with embassies to promote the practice of advanced countries in preserving environment,” said Al Shammari. He said that the events include campaigns for cleaning beaches, meadows, organising visits to introduce flora and fauna, schools competitions and programmes for university students.

“Over 250 activities were held under Qatar Sustainability Week 2020. Some clubs had opened doors for physical exercise free of cost during the week. Hotels had served healthy meals on discount prices.”

This year, he said, special programmes will be held for school students like eco-friendly schools. So far, three schools have been registered under this initiative. Qatar Sustainability Week, a National Campaign by Qatar Green Building Council aims to engage the community in a wide range of sustainability-oriented activities. 

The campaign plays a crucial role in raising awareness among the wider community while showcasing the progress Qatar has made in the areas of sustainability. The week serves as a unique platform to promote the nation’s sustainability vision as well as community engagement with relevant stakeholders under an overarching umbrella to achieve the nation’s sustainable development goals.

The 6th edition of Qatar Sustainability Week will take place from October 23 to 30, 2021. The resounding success of the Week in the last 5 years attracted more than 150,000 members of the public engaging in initiatives, activities and events across Qatar. 

QGBC is a non-profit and membership-driven organisation which is rallying and involving all sectors, stakeholders and the community in supporting the green cause and encouraging them to undertake projects and activities that advance the green development in Qatar.
