Al Duhail players in action
Al Sadd seems unstoppable and Al Duhail are the only side that has shown the prowess to challenge the reigning QNB Stars League (QSL) champions. As the top two sides square off in a crucial tie today, the result is expected to play a key role in deciding the leaders as the season approaches the halfway point.
Three points separate Al Duhail from Xavi Hernandez-coached Al Sadd, who have registered eight consecutive victories, firing a whopping 33 goals. Al Duhail’s attack has also been lethal against oppositions, scoring 21 goals so far but a shock defeat to Al Wakrah has cost ‘The Red Knights’ three points.
Al Duhail are hoping to pull back the points in the high-octane clash at Al Gharafa Stadium, where Al Sadd coach is eyeing to extend the lead.
“The matches between Al Sadd and Al Duhail are the best in Qatar now. We have a three-point lead and we must work hard to win to continue to lead,” Xavi said at a pre-match press conference.
“We expect a tough game and we have to play at our best level to get the three points for sure,” Xavi added.
“Certainly, it is still early and of course this match will not decide anything. But it will be very important because we can increase the difference to six points.”
Al Duhail coach Luis Castro, meanwhile, played down hype of the match, saying there is still a long way to go in the season.
“We want to score full points and I want to say that the result of the match will be either a win, a loss or a tie, but the league will not end after this match. The journey is still long. The Al Sadd match is very important, but it is not decisive,” Castro told reporters.
Al Duhail coach said defense will play an important role in the match.
Al Sadd's players during a practice session yesterday.
“Al Sadd have a strong attack. So have we. Everyone saw our team and there is defensive work that both teams must do. We will work to close the spaces in front of the attackers,” he added.
The match will kick off at 7:55pm after Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa will meet in another key clash at the same venue. Both teams are hoping to bounce back after facing defeats in the last rounds.
Laurent Blanc-coached Al Rayyan are placed six with nine points while Al Gharafa are fifth in the table with 12 points.
Al Rayyan will be without Colombian star James Rodriguez, who got injured during defeat to Al Arabi.
“We want to prepare for the match with all seriousness, to restore the team’s mentality last season, which was playing to win, which we do not have. Currently, my job to restore the players’ character and focus,” said Blanc.
Al Gharafa coach Andrea Stramaccioni said: “We must offer more in the upcoming matches and facing Al Rayyan is different for everyone. Its importance exceeds the issue of ranking.”
Today’s other match will pit Al Ahli and Al Shamal at Al Wakrah Stadium.
