Twenty two farms are participating in the ongoing ‘The Event of Honey’  at Al Mazroua and the quantity of the production of honey this year is about 6500kg.
“The volume of honey produced in Qatar which is expected to be displayed at The Honey Event is 6500kg and similar events will also be held in coming weeks in Al Khor-Dakhira and Al Wakarah,” said Abdul Rahman Al Sulaiti, Supervisors of Winter Vegetables Markets.

“The demand was huge and we were not expecting such a big number of visitors, but people were keen to visit the event from the first day and the event will conclude today at Al Mazroua then will be held in other winter markets,” he said.

The event organised by the Agricultural Affairs Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment is aimed at promoting local products and encourage farmers to increase honey production.

Regarding the prices, he said that the price of one kilogram of honey at the event is QR250 and it is cheaper as compared to the market by 10 to 20 percent. “Also the quality is extra fine and totally different from the stocks available in markets because the event’s honey is fresh and brought directly from farms, while no one knows about honey available in markets.”

Talking about the event’s experience previous years, Al Sulaiti said that the experience of organising the event in previous years  was successful and that is why the ministry expressed keenness to organise it every year, adding that “when we launched the first honey event there were only six farms participating, while this year the number reached to 22 farms.”

The event offers a chance to farmers to display fresh and pure honey to sell it directly to customers at reasonable prices. Also customers can find the best quality of honey at economical price, he explained.

After the honey event, the department will also organise other events for flowers and organic vegetables which can meet the customers’ needs.

The three winter vegetable markets  have sold more than 399kg of honey in the first four weeks in addition to more than 682 tonnes of vegetables and 278 tonnes of fruit. The markets provide an opportunity to farmers to sell their products directly to the customers without intervention of the middlemen.
