British embassy celebrates Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and the strong partnership between the UK and Qatar.
Doha: The British embassy in Doha yesterday celebrated Platinum Jubilee (70th anniversary) of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and the strong partnership between the UK and Qatar.
Guests of honour included Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Nuaimi, Minister of Communications and Information Technology H E Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai, British Secretary of State for Education Rt Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP, UK Defence Senior Advisor for the Middle East Air Marshal Martin Sampson among many other dignitaries.
Hosted by the British Ambassador to Qatar, H E Jon Wilks; over 600 guests, including UK Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave also joined the celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee at Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel.
The event also celebrated the strong partnership between Qatar and UK and the current progress in relations between the two countries.
The UK’s Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said: “I am so proud to be here with you today and hope the mutual affection and respect that exist between our two countries will only deepen over time.”
“In 1979, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the first female head of state to visit Qatar. In doing so, she began a firm friendship between our two countries that has just been celebrated with a Memorandum of Understanding,” he added.
Jon Wilks, UK Ambassador said: “Throughout decades of tremendous change in international affairs and at home, the Queen has been a source of continuity and stability. With a power to transcend politics and geography, she has touched the lives of millions beyond our shores. She has been our premier diplomat. No one has done more to strengthen the bonds of friendship, understanding and respect between the UK and the rest of the world.”
Jon Wilks also emphasized the growing diplomatic relations between Qatar and UK, especially in the past two years during his tenure in Doha.
“Since my arrival in March 2020 relations between our two countries have witnessed important growth with positive results that benefit our two peoples.
The Cabinet approved the cloud computing policy framework document. The adoption of the document comes as a platform to attract foreign and local investments in new digital services, support the growth of the national economy, complete digital transformation in the country, and help achieve Qatar’s goal of becoming a global digital center.
The Cabinet also approved the following: A draft general agreement for the establishment of the Arab common market for electricity. A draft agreement on the Arab common market for electricity. A draft air services agreement between the Government of the State of Qatar and the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Cabinet took the necessary measures to ratify the agreement on legal and judicial cooperation in criminal matters between the Government of the State of Qatar and the Government of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The Cabinet reviewed a draft law on higher education and took the appropriate decision.
