Twenty-two years after lifting the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship title in Qatar as the captain of Argentina, Juan Pablo Sorín still remembers in vivid detail a country intensely passionate about football and the Khalifa International Stadium which, he says, changed his life.
“Winning the FIFA World Youth Championship in Qatar was one of the best days of my life,” Sorín told www.sc.qa in an exclusive interview.
“We were the first Argentina side since Diego Maradona’s team to win the title. The Khalifa Stadium and that final in 1995 against Brazil changed my life, because we all returned to Argentina as champions of the world.”
He continued: “I can still remember the warmth of the night, the moon in the sky and the tournament in Doha we surprisingly won, even though no one had counted us among the favourites.
“Qatar at the time was already growing as a country, you could see the construction cranes starting to come up, and you felt the basis for the development you see now. We were treated very well and there was a fantastic organisation of the tournament.”
