Doha: The 57th International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) World Planning Congress will be held in Doha from November 8 to 11, 2021.

The theme of the Congress for this year is ‘Planning Unlocked: New Times, Better Places, Stronger Communities’. The in-person Congress will have workshops, sessions for presenting papers and associated exhibitions.  However, some speakers who are unable to attend the event in person will be allowed to speak virtually.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Municipality represented by the Urban Planning Sector in a press conference held yesterday at Ministry’s headquarters.

Addressing the press conference, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of Congress, Eng. Mubarak Al Nuaimi, said the main conference theme was chosen to give more uniqueness to the event and deal with post-COVID-19 challenges and climate change issues.

He said five sub-themes have been selected to cover all relevant topics in contemporary urban planning such as sustainability, inclusion, empowerment, well-being, healthy and smart cities, development, resilience and adaptability, exclusivity and urban connectivity.

The press conference was attended by Assistant Undersecretary for Urban Planning Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality and Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the Congress, Eng. Fahd Muhammad Al Qahtani and a number of other officials.

“We were very keen to have a special presence from GCC countries the activities of the Congress, as an event is dedicated to urban planning and the problems and challenges facing the Gulf cities, and the exchange of experiences and technical cooperation in this field,” said Eng. Al Nuaimi.

He noted that this Congress is being held in Doha only one year before Qatar hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is an opportunity for the whole world to see the wonderful preparations made by Qatar to host this giant sporting event.

“We are committed to making all the cities of Qatar, especially Doha, a model of contemporary cities that are environmentally friendly and achieve a quality of life for all through sustainable urban planning,” said Eng. Al Nuaimi.

He said the Congress will be a professional and scientific forum where global planning experiences will be exchanged at the highest levels between international, regional and Gulf delegations in the field of planning.
