The Transportation Master Plan for Qatar 2050 (TMPQ) identifies the vision, directions, and framework within an integrated set of initiatives for all transportation users including short, medium, and long-term investment in transportation infrastructure. The plan seeks to bring Qatar to the forefront of the world’s most sustainable nations in providing innovative and sustainable transportation solutions to boost the economy and improve the quality of life for its citizens and residents. The country significantly expanded its transport sector over the last decade. In the build-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the government invested in developing the country’s roads, rail networks and public transport systems to prepare for the visitors. The Ministry of Transport witnessed accomplishments across the land, maritime and air transport sectors in 2024. The Hamad Port implemented a range of measures to protect the environment and combat climate change. The port installed fixed and mobile environmental monitoring systems that measure ambient air quality, noise, groundwater, water quality, and marine environment. Mwani Qatar was awarded the ‘Glob of Honour’ Award and ‘Sector Award’ by the British Safety Council in Novermber 2024 for excellence in environmental management for its significant contributions to sustainable development and the preservation of Qatar’s marine ecosystem. Qatar achieved 73% electrification in its public bus fleet in the first quarter of 2024 and the plan is on track to reach 100% electrification of public bus fleet by 2030. The overall customer satisfaction rate with Doha Metro services scored 99.66% this year. Qatar Rail marked in May the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Doha Metro services. During the past five years, it provided reliable, safe, and exceptional travel experiences, gaining the trust of more than 170 million passengers in Qatar. The Doha Metro also played a key role in supporting more than 20 local, regional, and international events, and sports tournaments over the past five years. In terms of operational performance during the past five years, several remarkable milestones were achieved. The Metro transported over 170 million passengers, with the highest daily number recorded on November 24, 2022, during the FIFA World Cup, when it safely transported 828,115 passengers to and from the tournament stadiums and other destinations. Doha Metro’s operational performance has been instrumental in increasing the public transportation usage in Qatar. It now plays an effective and reliable alternative for commuting by the residents and visitors alike. This is due to its network connectivity to key destinations, event areas, tourist landmarks, as well as Hamad International Airport and the Lusail Tram network.
