The official visit by Lebanese President H E Joseph Aoun to Qatar this week, one of his first foreign visits since his election to presidency earlier this year, showed the strong relations between the two countries and a common desire to further bolster cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples and the entire region. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani hosted the Lebanese President at the Amiri Diwan, where the two leaders discussed the broad spectrum of bilateral relations as well the regional and global developments and joint efforts to enhance peace and stability. H H the Amir said Qatar stands with Lebanon, its people, and its institutions, reiterating Qatar’s firm stance toward Lebanon’s stability and territorial integrity. The Amir also announced the renewal of a $60m Qatari grant to support the salaries of the Lebanese Army, in addition to 162 military vehicles, to enable it to carry out its national duties of maintaining stability and controlling the borders throughout Lebanese territory. Qatar has also been supporting the Lebanese Army with fuel shipments, contributing to the country’s overall security and stability. The two sides also stressed their unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. They also reiterated their support for Syria's unity, sovereignty, and independence. Qatari officials have also stressed the need for the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from all Lebanese territories, and for all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and avoid escalation, in order to ensure security and stability in the region. Qatar indeed has stood by Lebanon as it faced daunting challenges over the past few years. The longstanding ties between Qatar and Lebanon are rooted in shared interests and the bilateral partnership is poised to expand further in areas such as energy, economy, and investment. The President’s visit and talks with H H the Amir are sure to deepen the cooperation and help achieve the aspirations of the people of Lebanon.
