Through timely legislation, effective governance mechanisms, innovative initiatives and public awareness, Qatar has taken and continuously taking result-oriented steps to address climate change. The country recognises the importance of addressing climate change and has taken several steps toward mitigating its impact. It has made numerous efforts in recent years to promote sustainability by highlighting and implementing environmentally-friendly practices in the community. Qatar is also making strides to address climate change through policy initiatives, technological advancements, and international collaboration which reflect country’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility in the face of global climate change. It is also investing in renewable energy technologies, particularly solar power. Qatar has also set a target to generate 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Qatar has been promoting sustainable urban planning and green building practices. Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, has been investing in green and sustainable projects globally. The fund has shown increasing interest in renewable energy projects, electric vehicle infrastructure, and other climate-conscious investments. Additionally, the country has been improving its waste management practices by adopting more sustainable methods such as recycling and composting. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) is also implementing numerous environmental projects and initiatives for protecting the environment in Qatar, diversifying and preserving its resources, and mitigating the effects of climate change. They include the Marine Environment Monitoring and Control Project, 5G Environmental Impact Study Initiative, Project to Enhance Terrestrial And Coastal Environmental Protection, Secondary Calibration Laboratory Project, Plant 10 Million Trees by 2030 Initiative, and Sea Turtle Protection Project, among many more.Marine Environment Monitoring and Control Project to Enhance Understanding of the Abundance and Impact of Marine Plastic Pollution is a regional project that is being implemented in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) while 5G Environmental Impact Study Initiative in Qatar aims to study the health effects of 5G technology on the public, educate them about the potential risks, and promote safety and awareness about 5G technology in the field of wireless communications. Initiatives for the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department aim at developing the National Network for Monitoring Ambient Air Quality. These initiatives aim to develop a national plan for monitoring air quality by measuring the concentration of pollutants in the ambient air and identifying the causes and sources of these pollutants to address them and improve air quality.
