Doha International Airport, formerly Qatar’s main international air gateway before the opening of Hamad International Airport in May 2014, will be pressed into service during the busy weeks of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
DIA is already fully functional and regularly used for Amiri services and visits of foreign dignitaries as well as for military purposes.
This prospective of DIA, aiming to cater to the Football fans from across the world, was announced by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker on Wednesday.
“We know that there would be huge demand over the two-month period before and after 2022 FIFA World Cup. So, we are already activating Doha International Airport,” he said.
“In the year 2020 and 2021, Doha International Airport will get full refurbishment to make it fully active to spread to the traffic between two airports,” said Akbar Al Baker.
He said the plan is to increase its capacity by another 10 million people.
He added that refurbishment refers just to cleaning and overhauling of systems as it is a fully functional airport.
