QNA

Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Public Health announced today, August 31, the registration of limited cases of the new sub-mutant of the coronavirus (Covid-19) called "EG.5" in Qatar, explaining that the registered cases were simple cases, and did not lead to hospitalization at this stage.

In a statement, the ministry indicated that it is closely monitoring the epidemiological situation regarding new variants of Covid-19.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization had announced the new sub-mutant of Covid-19 called EG.5, and so far, it has been reported in more than 50 countries, including the Gulf region.

In addition to the EG.5 variant, another variant, BA.2.86, has been reported in many countries, including the United States of America, England, and Denmark. This variant is important because it contains multiple genetic variations that differ from the previous virus. Despite so, no evidence was shown in those countries of an increase in its spread or the need for hospitalization when infected with it, but at the same time more data is being collected about it.

The Ministry of Public Health continues to monitor the situation and examine samples in the country regarding the two new mutants, stressing the importance of individuals at risk of severe infection following standard precautionary measures, including wearing a mask when in crowded places, cleaning hands regularly, and leaving a safe distance between people.

It recommended that people with Covid-19 symptoms undergo infection testing and seek treatment if they are at increased risk of developing severe complications, noting that patients with the following symptoms are advised to seek medical evaluation and a possible treatment protocol: Fever with a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or higher, chills, fatigue and body aches, cough with chest pain, and shortness of breath.

It stated that individuals most at risk include people aged 60 or over, and those suffering from chronic medical conditions.

According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that the two new sub mutants cause more severe symptoms and illness than the Omicron mutant or other existing variants.
