The General Directorate of Traffic has implemented a complete action plan with the support of CCTV cameras to ensure smooth traffic flow especially after reopening of schools after the summer break, a traffic officials has said.

“The Traffic Department has implemented an action plan focused on intensifying the deployment of traffic police and patrols at all major roads, intersections and in surroundings of the schools to ease the traffic flow,” said Director of Traffic Awareness Department of the General Directorate of Traffic, Brigadier Dr. Muhammad Radi Al Hajri.

Speaking to Qatar Radio yesterday, he said the action plan also aimed at preventing road accidents in these areas by managing traffic on roads. He also assured the road users that traffic diversions causing traffic jams will end very soon.

“The plan was supported by CCTV cameras ‘Tala’ transmitting live the traffic situation at crowded places, enabling police patrols for rapid intervention in case of emergencies, such as a road accident causing traffic jam,” said Al Hajri.

He said the action plan was adopted under the round-the-year efforts by the General Directorate of Traffic to put an end to traffic accidents, following its ambitious project to reduce major injuries and casualties in the country.

Al Hajri said the Traffic Awareness Department had prepared a complete plan listing many activities to spread traffic awareness among students, their parents and road users.

Talking about the role of road engineering in traffic safety, he said the Traffic Safety Department at the General Directorate of Traffic is setting road safety standards and conditions in coordination with the authorities concerned.

“The Department is also preparing plans related to controlling and following up traffic, selecting radars, traffic signal cameras, and surveillance cameras, identifying places that need devices and supervising their operation and installation,” said Al Hajri.

He said the Traffic Safety Department also identifies points at intersections, signals and curves causing frequent accidents in order to rectify them.

“The Department also ensures the maintenance and implementation of roads in cooperation with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Municipality,” said Al Hajri. Traffic diversions also fall under this department, he said.

“The traffic diversions lead to traffic jams. I would like to say that all traffic diversions will end very soon.”
