Doha, Qatar: The Permanent Exhibition at Heritage Library, nestled at the heart of the Qatar National Library (QNL), has emerged as a captivating beacon for enthusiasts seeking a profound understanding of the Arab and Islamic world – including Qatar’s rich history and heritage.

As its reputation grows, the Permanent Exhibition, which displays around 400 items, continues to attract an increasing number of eager students, all passionately seeking to deepen their understanding of Qatar’s rich history and cherished heritage, said Stephane J Ipert - Director of Distinctive Collections at QNL.

“The Permanent Exhibition of the Heritage Library attracts different groups of visitors to explore the heritage collection. We have had secondary school students visiting to explore various resources and gain an understanding of the history of Qatar and its heritage. This has inspired teachers in designing their teaching plans,” he told The Peninsula.

“Students from different universities have regularly visited the library as part of their assignments and general courses related to Qatar’s history. Additionally, our specialists support students from the History program at Qatar University during their field trips, particularly while studying manuscript courses,” he added.

The Heritage Library provides opportunities to showcase several manuscripts written on different materials, such as papyrus, parchment, or paper, with diverse illuminations, allowing them to know more about the codicology of the manuscript.

“We have also conducted several tours focusing on our collection of scientific manuscripts.

“Our collection allows students in Qatar to witness several manuscripts that trace the role of Muslim scholars in various fields such as science, mathematics, geometry, and engineering. This knowledge base becomes valuable as they study courses related to the hardware of musical instruments or radio, deepening their understanding of the contributions of Islamic scholars throughout the centuries,” said Ipert.

The Heritage Library houses a remarkable collection of over 3,500 Islamic manuscripts and 500 calligraphic panels and artifacts. The carefully curated collection covers various subjects and includes rare items and series, reflecting its importance as a valuable cultural and historical resource.

Through its multifaceted approach to preservation, accessibility, and community engagement, QNL’s Heritage Library stands as a vital institution in protecting and promoting cultural heritage, ensuring that these valuable resources are protected, shared, and appreciated by present and future generations.

“Besides preservation and conservation efforts, the Heritage Library engages with researchers, scholars, and the public through various platforms. The library organizes exhibitions, events, and collaborative projects to showcase its collection and foster community engagement. By promoting research, knowledge sharing, and cultural exchange, the Heritage Library ensures its collection’s enduring significance and relevance to a wide audience,” said Ipert.
