Doha, Qatar: Who plays board games these days? You might be surprised to learn that a passionate community dedicated to this age-old pastime is flourishing in the country. But what truly captivates us is how one Qatari has elevated board gaming to a whole new level, where players can embark on a journey of connection and cultural discovery.

The Peninsula had the privilege of talking with Abdulrahman Al Homaid, a visionary board game maker, who shared his passion and vision for a new kind of gaming experience. Al Homaid’s childhood love for board games sparked a desire to create something more profound than mere entertainment. He wanted to foster connections among players, ignite a thirst for cultural knowledge, and above all, bring joy to the act of playing together.

“I have had a passion for board games since I was a child playing Monopoly, Risk, UNO, or Chess. Many of us play video games online with people around the globe. But when playing board games in the physical world, traditionally on the table, you get similar excitement with different flavours. In board games, you get together as family and friends in the same place and can interact closely with each other. One can treasure those joyful moments with friends and family while playing board games,” Al Homaid explained.

Traditional Qatari board games have gracefully evolved over time, becoming an integral part of cultural heritage. Al Homaid emphasized the enduring popularity of games like Chess, Dama, and Carrom, which have woven themselves into the fabric of Qatar’s gaming culture. In fact, dedicated leagues and tournaments for these games have emerged, attracting enthusiasts who revel in the thrill of competition and the opportunity to witness these games being played at the highest level.

However, Al Homaid’s contributions to the world of board games go beyond preserving tradition. His creations serve as reflections of Qatar’s unique cultural identity. One such creation is “Moder Kaber,” (Big Boss in English) a game that hinges on the art of persuasion, challenging players to employ their convincing abilities to achieve victory. The game features job cards adorned with characters donning traditional Qatari attire like Thob and Abaya, representing the diverse professions found within this country. This not only provides an entertaining experience but also imparts knowledge about Qatar’s rich cultural tapestry.

In Al Homaid’s latest masterpiece, “RADAR,” players are immersed in a thrilling exploration of car culture. The objective is to avoid getting caught on the radar by adhering to street speed limits. The game demands critical thinking and basic math skills, making it accessible and engaging for players as young as eight. Families can come together, imparting lessons of responsible driving to children while reveling in a world of fun and excitement.

“Families can play with their children, teach them about the speed limit, and have fun similarly. The game can also be used as an awareness and educational tool if you think about it,” he explained.

Beyond their entertainment value, board games in Qatar play a crucial role in fostering social connections and community engagement. Al Homaid highlighted the appeal of numerous international board games, each offering a distinct theme and mechanics that captivate players seeking specific experiences.

The rise of digital gaming might have led some to believe that traditional board games would fade into oblivion. On the contrary, the advent of digital gaming has breathed new life into the board game renaissance, the board game maker stressed.

Al Homaid believes that the interests of both digital and physical gaming worlds can harmoniously coexist. While video games connect players across vast distances, board games bridge the gap between individuals gathered around the same table, fostering tangible experiences that resonate deeply within us. He actively promotes board games through his participation in public events across Qatar, including Darb Al Saai, Geekdom events, the Qatar National Library, and schools that warmly embrace his creations.

“What I am trying to do here is to promote gaming outside the digital world, as I do not prevent it. Digital games will exit throughout the generations for sure. I believe the digital and physical worlds can coexist in the market.”

Board games in Qatar transcend mere entertainment. They provide a gateway to cultural appreciation, social interaction, and meaningful connections. Al Homaid’s unwavering dedication to crafting board games that reflect Qatar’s heritage and values stands as a testament to the power of these analog experiences in an increasingly digital age.

So, the next time you gather with friends and family, why not dust off that board game and embark on a journey of fun, learning, and connection? The table is set, and the possibilities are endless. Let the games begin!
