Doha: Advanced methods of prevention, management and treatment of most prevalent metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity will be discussed over three days during a conference which will begin today in Doha.
The Third Qatar Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Conference (QDEM-3) will begin with pre conference workshops and followed by the main event at the Sheraton Doha.
The conference is being hosted by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Qatar Metabolic Institute and highlight on diabetes, obesity, thyroid and metabolic and endocrine related diseases.
The conference translates the most recent updates and research findings in the field of endocrinology with a specific focus on key priorities for Qatar, such as diabetes and obesity and topics of relevance to the region, said Dr Mahmoud Ali Zirie, Senior Consultant and Head of HMC’s Endocrinology and Diabetes Division, Chief of Endocrinology Section at HMC to media persons yesterday.
QDEM-3 will bring together more than 700 local and international experts. They will include nine speakers from European and regional countries.
International, regional and local experts will talk on a range of carefully selected contemporary and relevant topics to a diverse audience of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare professionals, as well as scientists and academics.
“The Third Qatar Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Conference is carefully designed to cover diverse aspects of endocrinology, metabolic bone disease, diabetes and women health. This conference will be one of the year’s most significant gatherings of endocrinology clinicians and professionals in this region. We aim to address the needs of all those with an interest in the field, from the trainee, to the primary health care generalist and secondary/tertiary care specialist physician,” said Dr Ali Zirie, who is also the Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee.
The conference is part of events being held by the HMC to coincide with the World Diabetes Day which was commemorated on November 14.
“At HMC we conduct month long awareness activities to mark the World Diabetes Day. We have continued to hold activities at schools, institutions, public places and healthcare facilities. Among the events have screened at least 400 people and 50 have been found with newly diagnosed diabetics,” said Manal Musallam Othman, Director Didactic Education, HMC.
“Intensive efforts by the health authorities to fight diabetes in the country have resulted positively and the prevalence of the condition among adults,” she added.
At present the prevalence of diabetes in Qatar is 17 percent among the adult population.
