Montreal---Michael Sam, who abruptly left the club for "personal reasons," has decided to rejoin the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes.
The Alouettes, who signed Sam to a two-year deal, suspended him after he left the club, but they welcomed him back on the weekend.
Sam is the first openly gay player to be drafted by a National Football League team and then to sign a contract with a CFL team.
"Thank you all so much for your support. Great to be back in Montreal with the club. Let's go #Als!," Sam wrote on his Twitter page.
The Alouettes played their season-opening game on Thursday, losing to the Ottawa Redblacks.
Sam was cut by the St. Louis Rams, who drafted him in the seventh round of the NFL entry draft in 2014. He also spent time practising with the Dallas Cowboys.
