The Ministry of Labour is participating in the 110th session of the International Labour Conference 2022 with a high-level delegation headed by Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri.

During the opening session of the conference, Minister of Labour was elected Vice-President of the Conference on behalf of government representatives, in addition to the election of two Vice-Presidents for employers’ and workers’ representatives.

The Minister assuming the position of Vice-President of the International Labour Conference underlines the pivotal role played by Qatar during the past years in the labour sector, reflects the legislative reforms, and highlights its achievements, various measures and initiatives to establish a safe and healthy work environment.

Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri said: “My election as Vice-President of the International Labour Conference evinces the appreciation of the efforts of the State of Qatar in the labour sector, and also reflects the confidence of Asia and the Pacific in representing them through such crucial position during the 110th session of the International Labour Conference.”

H E Dr. Smaikh underlined  that the International Labour Conference succeeded in providing a qualitative global platform that brings together the three parties to work, which facilitated discussions over social issues related to realm of labour, and the search for constructive solutions.

He noted that this year’s conference is of key importance as it is being held in attendance, for the first time in two years, due to the fallout of COVID-19 outbreak and the successive global crises that emanated and triggered adverse impacts on the labour sector around the world.

Dr. Smaikh communicated hopes that the conference would achieve the desired goals of its convening and come out with recommendations that would enhance consensus between the three working parties and support their ability to overcome the effects of the crises that the world was exposed to during previous periods.

The International Labour Conference is the highest decision-making authority of the ILO, which provides a real platform through which governments, employers’ and labour’ organisations in member states can hold tripartite discussions on social and labour issues.

The International Labour Conference, the ‘International Labour Parliament’, is held in Geneva annually to set ILO general policies , including conventions and recommendations.

In light of successive global crises, the 110th session of the International Labour Conference 2022 is of special importance, especially due to the successive global crises that resulted in the negative impacts on labour world.

The conference will discuss, through various committees or panel discussions a myriad of concerns associated with labour sector worldwide, including the possibility of amending the ILO Declaration on fundamental principles and rights at work to include safe and healthy working conditions, in addition to discussing the adoption of an international instrument on apprenticeships.

The committees will also discuss concepts of suitable  work, social and solidarity economy, and the strategic objective of employment as part of the follow-up mechanism to the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalisation.

The various committees of the conference will hold intensive meetings starting from May 30, while the plenary sessions will be held from June 6 to 11, the high-level summit will be held on June 10, and the conference will wrap up on June 11.
