Doha: The world-class medical expertise now available at Sidra Medicine is expected to decrease number of patients from Qatar travelling abroad to receive most sophisticated treatment for their rare and complex health conditions.

Sidra Medicine has world class health professionals, researchers and scientists who work to care for women, young people and children.

“Our experts have opened new services and treatments that are advancing services and clinical care in Qatar and the region. We are already seeing patients from other parts of the region choosing to come to Sidra Medicine for treatment, and citizens and residents of Qatar choosing Sidra Medicine over overseas treatment,” Peter Morris, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Sidra Medicine told The Peninsula.

“Most importantly, our healthcare professionals work together in teams structured around each patient’s individual needs and in an environment of collaboration, compassion, respect and trust,” he added.

As part of its unique and outstanding services to the patients, Sidra Medicine is proving many first-of-its kind services in the region at state of art facilities.

In this regard, Sidra Medicine is set to create a regional center of excellence in pediatric and congenital cardiology, building on the strength of its international team, state-of-the-art equipment and specialty expertise in children’s and adult congenital health.

It’s unique services include care for fetal cardiology.

The Centre has already started receiving regional patients.

“The Sidra Medicine Heart Center is one of the institution’s flagship programs and is positioned to become a leading center in the region for patients suffering from congenital heart disease. Under the leadership of Prof. Ziyad M. Hijazi, the Center has a world-renowned team, cutting edge equipment and facilities and a best-in-class model of care that delivers comprehensive ‘one-stop’ care for patients,” said Morris.

The Center is home to a number of customized and state-of-the-art technologies including Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratories.

The Heart Center encompasses a multidisciplinary team that consists of surgeons, interventionists, cardiac intensivists, hospitalists, nurse practitioners, nurses, technologists and perfusionists, among other.

In addition, the Heart Center works in collaboration with a wide range of other clinical services across Sidra Medicine, including anesthesia, perioperative services, allied health (respiratory therapy). “Sidra Medicine currently has three Cardiac Catheterizations (the insertion of a catheter into a chamber or vessel of the heart) rooms. One of our three rooms is a hybrid suite equipped with advanced catheterization machine in an operating room environment. This room, which is the only one of its kind in the Middle East, will enable the team to work hand-in-hand on complex cases that will require open-chest surgery and interventional therapy at the same time,” said Morris.

“The Center will provide a wide range of services including cardiac surgery, interventional therapies, electrophysiological therapies, cardiac anesthesia, perfusion, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), cardiac intensive care, non-invasive cardiology, outpatient and inpatient cardiac care as well as fetal cardiology,” he added.

From last month Sidra Medicine began to offer robotic surgery for certain conditions in children’s service and will shortly be offering robotic surgery for certain gynecological conditions. Also it opened children’s emergency services recently.
