Parliament of Iran

Tehran: Nearly 12,000 candidates including more than 1,100 women are registered as candidates for 290 parliamentary seats in Iran, the Interior Ministry said Saturday.

The candidate slate is a record.

The last parliamentary vote in 2012 saw nearly 5,000 people seek mandates. The number of women seeking office is more that triple the number from four years ago.

The Interior Ministry extended the registration deadline to midnight Friday to accommodate the surge in candidate registrations.

The election is February 26.
