Doha: Qatar-Singapore Urban Planning Forum was held yesterday where urban planning experts from both the countries showcased their achievements in urban planning and sustainable development.
The Forum which was hosted by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment aimed at exchanging expertise and enhancing co-operation between two countries.
The opening ceremony was attended by Assistant Undersecretary for Planning at the Ministry of Municipal and Environment (MME), Eng. Fahad Mohammed Al Qahtani; Vice President of Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore, Han Yong; and Ambassador of Singapore to Qatar, Jai S Sohan.
Officials from the Urban Planning Department of Qatar and members of a delegation from Singapore also attended the Forum.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Eng. Fahad Mohammed Al Qahtani said: “The Forum, which is being held in Doha, is one of the most important results of the cooperation agreement signed between the Urban Re-Development Authority of Singapore and the Urban Planning Sector at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment of Qatar.”
He said that the Forum aims at exchanging experiences and enhance technical and professional participation in the areas of urban planning, sustainable development and other related fields.
Director of the Urban Planning Department at MME, Eng. Abdulla Al Karrani, said: “This forum is the third of its kind as we celebrate 10 years of cooperation and the signing of the agreement with Singapore in 2009, where the first forum between the two sides was held in 2010 in Singapore, and Qatar hosted the second forum in Doha.”
“The agreement between two countries meant to exchange experiences and benefit from experiences in various fields and to send, train and qualify cadres from both sides, and benefit from the latest achievements in the field of urban planning,” said Al Karrani.
He said that during the past two years, five urban planners were dispatched from the urban plan project and the urban planning sector. He also praised the excellence, cooperation and experience gained during that period by both sides
Qatar presented at the forum a lot of its expertise and achievements in various fields including use of GIS and digital tools in urban planning and preparations for the 2022 World Cup. The forum also highlighted the achievements of the Singaporean side in the field of urban planning.
