Doha, Qatar: A dashboard tool at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) enables medical teams to improve patient care and reduce harm by providing fast and accurate data on sepsis — a life — threatening emergency.
The dashboard is part of a comprehensive programme implemented to improve sepsis care across the HMC hospitals.
Nursing informatics has contributed important and predictive data to the sepsis dashboard, which benefit patients and medical teams.
“The integration of nursing informatics not only supports the mission to combat sepsis but also exemplifies the transformative impact of data-driven research in healthcare,” according to Dr. Abdulsalam Saif, Division Head-Medicine Critical Care, HMC Sepsis Lead.
“This innovative approach involves leveraging meaningful data and predictive models to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, enabling quicker and more precise sepsis intervention. We express our profound gratitude for the remarkable nursing informatics role and contributions to the HMC Sepsis,” he said.
Sepsis is a life-threatening emergency that happens when the body’s response to an infection damages vital organs. It continues to be a major danger to patients and globally remains a leading cause of death in hospitals. Yet, through heightened awareness, early detection, and swift treatment, many lives can be spared.
Anyone with an infection can get sepsis, but that there are some people more at risk including those who have recently had surgery or a serious illness, women who have just given birth, had a miscarriage, premature babies or older adults, and people with chronic diseases as well as people with a weakened immune system.
A sepsis programme developed and implemented across at HMC facilities has enhanced patient care according to a study, “A strategic guide for the development of a corporate sepsis programme,” published in Journal of Emergency Medicine, Trauma and Medical Care.
The study has highlighted that the Corporate Sepsis Programme has proved successful. A dedicated education subcommittee developed and implemented a comprehensive nursing training programme, including e-learning initiatives in collaboration with the Hamad International Training Centre (HITC), clinical and nursing informatics and medical and nursing education. These efforts led to improved and timely management practices.
The study has concluded that, “HMC Sepsis Programme improved sepsis outcome in Qatar. A systematic approach, application of evidence-based practice, staff empowerment, and senior leadership engagement, a clear structure of governance, quality assurance and reporting are critical elements of its success.”
