The Foot and Ankle unit in Hamad Medical Corporation’s Orthopedic Surgery Department has seen an increased demand for services and has been able to reduce the number of patients travelling abroad for treatment.

Established in 2012, with a dedicated health care team, the unit provides specialised care for all types of foot and ankle conditions including congenital deformities, developmental disabilities, diabetes or vascular problems, sport injuries and trauma. It provides most advanced treatment methods and plans to introduce several new services soon, Dr. Mohamed Maged Mekhaimar, Senior Consultant at the Orthopedic Surgery Department, told media persons recently.

“We treat a wide array of foot and ankle problems and provide a holistic range of services that include common foot and ankle conditions. We also treat sport injuries, people with diabetes and cover all types of trauma. We conduct at least five elective surgeries every day beside trauma cases,” said Maged Mekhaimar who has specialised in foot and ankle surgeries.

The Foot and Ankle unit is part of HMC’s Orthopedic Surgery Department and Bone and Joint Center, and is lead by Dr Mohammed Al Ateeq Al Dosari.

The clinic rooms at the Bone and Joint Center have high-tech equipment allowing for up-to-the-minute access to patient diagnostics and information. Patients are also  referred to the Hamad General Hospital for surgical intervention.

“Patients benefit from advanced and multi-disciplinary treatment methods. We conduct minimally invasive surgeries and have common and modern treatment methods like PRP, a common treatment for foot and ankle conditions. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance made of concentrated plasma. It has higher levels of platelets, proteins and other substances than regular blood plasma does.

Doctors can inject PRP into one’s body to help their cells heal faster,” said Dr Maged Mekhaimar.

“Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) therapy will be soon available at the hospital. It is a regenerative therapy procedure that uses cells from a patient’s bone marrow to initiate healing for a number of orthopedic conditions, including osteoarthritis and cartilage injuries. It is among the services to be introduced soon,” said Dr Maged Mekhaimar.

“Another technology set to be launched soon is Standing CT that gets the most accurate diagnosis for one’s injury. Three-dimensional imaging helps ensure the right diagnosis,” he added.
