Things to do this weekend in Qatar (October 25-27, 2018)

There are a lot of exciting events taking place in Qatar this weekend, varying from the 48th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships to the 14th Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition. 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Doha 2018

Qatar for the first time will be hosting the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Doha 2018.

Over 600 gymnasts from 78 countries are taking part in the important event, which serves as the first qualifying event for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The event has lured 2016 Olympic all-around champions Simone Biles (USA) and Kohei Uchimura (Japan), who are leading the stellar line-up.

Reigning champions Morgan Hurd of the USA and Xiao Ruoteng – the Chinese star will also be defending their title.

The tickets for the event are sold online and are available at Virgin Megastore outlets.

Russian Festival

Visit Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani (FBQ) Museum to celebrate Russian culture with a sensational festival on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27.

Under the theme of intercultural exchange, an art and photography exhibition will display work by young and established, Russian and foreign artists, complimenting the current display of FBQ Museum’s Russian collection.

A series of performances will include renowned pianist Sonja Park and Russian performer Nina Ivanova from ICM, a variety of performances by Russian dance groups, “Renaissance” and “Arabesque of Qatar” from the ballet studio, the ‘Teens Club’ and the ‘Kamerton’ choirs, performing various folk songs and instrumental pieces.

A variety of Russian foods will be available during the festival.

When: The opening ceremony will start at 5 pm on Friday in the Amphitheatre and Saturday also performance is at 4pm in the Amphitheatre

14th Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition

The 14th edition of Heya will showcase abayas, jalabiyas, and gowns by designers from Qatar, the GCC and beyond. Heya will also include shoes, belts and bags, perfumes and cosmetic products for discerning ladies.

From the 26th to the 30th of October, visitors will be able to purchase from boutique designers as well as larger brands, while taking in the many fashion shows, forums and workshops held alongside the exhibition.

Qatar Classic 2018 Squash Tournament

The final countdown has begun for the Qatar Classic 2018, the 16th edition of the annual premier squash tournament.

World No.1 Mohammed El Shorbagy is leading the pack of 48 players, including most of the world’s top 20, who will be competing for the tournament’s total cash prize of $177,750 and trophy.
Squash fans will have the wonderful opportunity of witnessing their favorite stars on parade with stars including World No.2 Ali Farag, the in form Simon Rosner and Miguel Angel Rodriguez among others.

Qatar’s Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi, Syed Azlan Amjad and Abdulrahman Al Malki are leading the local challenge.

Art Exhibition on Feminism

The exhibition offers a multi-voiced interpretation of feminism through contemporary art. In addition, it tackles concepts around feminism with works that embrace women empowerment, with literal or metaphorical visualizations.

Al Kuwari, Al Kilani and Almumin are among the 12 local and international female artists with more than 40 art pieces in various media on show at the month-long exhibition. Other participating artists include Qatari artists Fatima Mohammed, Sheikha Al Hardan, Maryam Al Homaid,  Shua’a Al Muftah, , Sara Al-Buainain, Shouq Al Mana and Aisha Al Malki as well as Hadeer Omar from Yemen and Shaima Al Tamimi from Egypt.

Katara Cultural Diversity Festival

This weekend the event will feature folkloric shows from the Sultanate of Oman.

The Cultural diversity festival features an array of cultural performances from different nations around the world and aims to act as bridge between cultures and provide a multicultural harmonious environment.

In addition to international folkloric groups, ten local bands from different communities in Qatar will be performing during the festival.

The countries taking part in this festival are India, Oman, China, Ghana, Macedonia, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Czech Republic, Iran, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Bulgaria, Morocco, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Bosnia and Russia.

The festival is free for everyone.

'Experiments with Truth' exhibition

On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) opened an art exhibition titled “Experiments of Truth” in building 16 at Katara in cooperation with the Embassy of India in Doha.

All the paintings in the exhibition are based on the life of Gandhi, his vision, mission, values and simplicity.
