Despite Doha being one of the safest cities globally, thanks to the awareness about security and monitoring, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has urged people not to leave valuable items visible in their vehicles without taking adequate safety measures.

The Ministry insists such behaviour may encourage theft and other crimes.

“Do not leave your phone or valuables in a visible place in the vehicle. Your alertness reflects compliance with safety procedures and emphasises the concept that security is a shared responsibility,” the Ministry tweeted.

Valuable items such as laptops, phones, and money should not be left visible in the vehicle as some motorists used to do, especially in commercial streets the MoI emphasised, and said,  “Leaving your mobile phones or valuables visible in the car might tempt a burglar.”

The MoI has been working on building an integrated security system, ensuring security throughout the country, and enhancing security awareness among the public. So far, this has contributed to the decrease in the crime rate in Qatar. The Ministry has advised the public to take the necessary preventive measures to secure their cars from theft by following safety instructions.

To educate the public about the dangers of crimes and being victims, the Ministry carries out many awareness drives on its media platforms.

The victim has a role to play in the crime that does not differ from the perpetrator.

By neglecting and not taking the necessary security measures in his home, car, or with money, the victim exposes himself to theft. According to Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2021, Doha was placed at No. 2 regarding safety and low crime rate among 431 cities covered in the report.

Doha secured 87.96 points in the safety index, while its crime index is just 12.04 points. According to the classification rules of the report, cities have been ranked in reverse order, that the city that occupies 431st place is the city with the lowest crime rate and ranks first in safety and security. Doha stood at 430th position.

Qatar had also retained its position as the ‘Safest Country’ globally as per the 2020 mid-year Crime Index by Numbeo released in July last year. In the Safety Index, Qatar ranked first by scoring 88.10 points out of 100, in reverse of the Crime Index.
