DOHA: Over 40 pugilists are expected feature in the two-day Doha Open Championships, President of Qatar Boxing Federation (QBF) said yesterday.
The fourth edition of the event being staged after a gap of six years - will see boxers competition in senior and junior categories, Yousuf Ali Al Kazim, President of QBF, said.
“We are thrilled to bring together an event that could help us find a new champion boxer. Right now some 40 boxers have registered for the event,” Al Kazim said.
“In the last event held in 2008, we had 90 entries. This time you may see a lesser number because we have mandatory for all entries to undergo a medical test,” Al Kazim added.
“Anyone who fails the test will not be allowed to compete,” Al Kazim said.
The event starts at Qatar SC Indoor Hall tomorrow. The first bout will start at 4;30pm.
“We are looking for youngsters who can take up this sport seriously. Anyone who we feel has the talent, will be given full support by Qatar Boxing Federation to enhance their profile as boxers,’ Al Kazim said.
The event was previously held in 2000, 2001 and 2008. However, this year’s edition will now become a regular feature on the Doha sports calendar released by Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC).
“Yes, this event will held annually. We know that there’s interest in this sport and we have plans to stage events regularly,” the QBF president said.
Al Kazim said there 26 entries in the Seniors Class - reserved for those fall between the ages of 18 and 40. The Juniors Class has a total of 14 entries as of today.
“There could be an increase in the number of participants as this event to open to all those residing in Qatar,” Al Kazim said.
A total of 11 referees will conduct the event to be contested on a new scoring system introduced by AIBA, the world governing body.
“This is an exciting time for us. We want to revive the spirit of boxing in youngsters. There will be prize money for the winners. The winners will be competing for gold, silver and bronze medals,” Al Kazim said.
“Anyone who shows us the spark inside the ring can be fast-tracked for an event to be held in Belarus next month,” Al Kazim said. “We are very optimistic,” he added.
The draws for the two-day event will be held today.
