Doha, Qatar: As the country experiences rapid weather shifts from winter to spring, experts have raised concerns about potential risks urging the public to take necessary precautions. Health experts and weather authorities have issued warnings on related issues.

People with pre-existing conditions, such as sinus and respiratory allergies, are advised to take precautions. Senior Consultant of Emergency Medicine at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Dr. Warda Ali Alsaad, said yesterday that during seasonal fluctuations between winter and summer, symptoms of respiratory diseases tend to increase.

“Conditions such as upper respiratory tract infections and bronchitis are common during this weather change,” she said, emphasising the importance of taking precautions and seeking medical care if necessary.

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), in a social media awareness message, has urged the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from health and safety risks associated with fluctuating weather conditions, particularly dust and strong winds. To safeguard the respiratory system, it is recommended to wear a mask to prevent inhaling harmful pollutants carried by the wind.

Individuals experiencing mild symptoms, such as a cough or wheezing, should visit their Primary Health Care Center. Those with more severe breathing problems may have a lung infection and should go directly to the HMC Emergency Department.

Additionally, PHCC has said that staying away from trees and poles is crucial, as strong winds can cause branches or poles to fall, posing a danger to life. When winds intensify, staying indoors in a safe place is the best option for you and your family. It’s also important to avoid driving in stormy conditions, as strong winds can cause sudden changes in the vehicle’s direction, increasing the risk of accidents. Lastly, ensuring that doors and windows are tightly secured can prevent them from being unexpectedly opened by strong winds, reducing the risk of potential damage or accidents.

The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority’s Meteorology Department recently issued a public advisory as the country enters the Al-Sarayat season. This season, which begins in late March and lasts until mid-May, is known for unpredictable and dramatic weather conditions.

Weather authorities have advised outdoor event organisers and anyone planning activities during this period to prepare backup plans, as the Al Sarayat season makes weather predictions difficult. The Department of Meteorology, in its daily weather report, has predicted strong winds and low horizontal visibility for today.
