Experts yesterday discussed the latest trends in sports arbi-tration and dispute settlement during the panel discussions held as part of the 4th World Conference on International Arbitration.
The first panel on the second day of the conference focused on arbitration in the field of sports, and was mod-erated by lawyer and interna-tional arbitrator Khalid Al Mohannadi.
Speakers included Salman Al Ansari, Partner at Al Ansari & Associates Law Firm, who reviewed arbitral procedures of the Qatar Sports Arbitration Foundation (QSAF), while Pro-fessor Abdulla Al Hayan, Dean of Law School at Kuwait Uni-versity discussed the appeal proceedings against awards of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) before the Swiss Federal Court.
Khadeja Al Zarraa, Senior Associate at Al Ansari & Asso-ciates Law Firm spoke about procedures of appealing the awards of the Qatar Sports Arbi-tration Authority, while Essa Al Sulaiti, Chairman of Essa Alsu-laiti Law Firm examined ad-hoc arbitration according to CAS rules and procedures.
The second panel titled ‘Highlights on Arbitration in GCC and Arab countries’ was moderated by QICCA Board Member for International Rela-tions Dr Sheikh Thani bin Ali Al Thani.
Speaking at the panel, Dr. Ismail Saleem, Director of Cairo Regional Centre for Interna-tional Commercial Arbitration highlighted arbitration in Egypt, while Professor Riyad Fakhri, Professor at University of Hassan II & Legal Counsel to the Minister of Health highlighted the Qatari Mediation Law.
Dr. Moosa Al Azri, CEO of the Oman Commercial Arbi-tration Centre discussed arbi-tration in the Sultanate of O m a n , w h i l e Dr. Tareq AlShumaimry, Gen-eral-Secretary of GCC Com-mercial Arbitration Center reviewed arbitration in the GCC region and the overview of rules of the GCC Commercial Arbi-tration Centre.
The third session was held under the theme ‘Recent Inter-national Trends in the Set-tlement of Commercial Dis-putes’ and was moderated by Mubarak Al Sualiti, Chairman of Al Sulaiti Law Firm.
During the event, Professor Mohamed Sameh Amr, former Chairman of Executive Council of UNESCO and Chair of International Law Department at Cairo University discussed the recent develop-m e n t s i n a r b i t r a t i o n procedures.
Professor Georges Affaki, Professor of law at the Uni-versity of Paris II and Co-founder of Affaki Law Firm Paris reviewed the recent changes and development in international arbitration, prin-ciples and procedures, while Dr. Imad Qaymansani, Assistant Professor at the College of Law at Qatar University presented an overview of the Qatar Medi-ation Law and the confidenti-ality principles in the Law.
Dr. Mohamed Salem Abu Al Faraj, Associate Professor at the College of Law at Qatar Uni-versity spoke about third-party arbitration funding in terms of concept and practical obstacles, while Professor Fakhri high-lighted the mediation rules in the Maghreb region.
The fourth panel, which was moderated by Marwan Al Musleh, former General Counsel at Ras Gas Group discussed exceptional procedures for international commercial arbi-tration amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the session, Professor Loukas Misteils, Pro-fessor of Transnational Com-mercial Law and Director of the QMUL-UNIDROIT Institute of Transnational Commercial Law at Queen Mary Law School focused on principles, pro-ceedings, and obstacles to virtual arbitration hearings.
Lord Gold Smith, UK’s former Attorney General and Chair of European and Asian Litigation at Debevoise & Plimpton highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on principles and procedures of arbitration, while Dr. Zachary Calo, Professor of law at the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University discussed the relation between technology and ADR.George Vlavianos, FCIArb and Partner of DLA Piper reviewed a practical case for arbitration in the face of COVID-19.
