Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has set up artificial nests for osprey birds breeding on Al Aaliya Island as part of its activity to celebrate Qatar Environment Day 2023, which is being held under the slogan "Our Earth, Our Legacy."
Speaking on Saturday, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, HE Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al-Thani, reiterated that the celebration of Qatar Environment Day confirms the ministry's vision and strategy to protect the local environment and achieve sustainable development, especially as the local environment is part of the historical heritage of Qatar and is a major component of the culture of the Qatari people.
Regarding the construction of artificial nests for the osprey, Qatari photographer and environmental researcher Hamad Al-Khulaifi told The Peninsula that the project to build artificial nests on the coasts of Qatar to target the osprey bird for reproduction is necessary because the bird takes a long time to build its nest and also because there are no high places on the Qatari coasts for it to build the nest.
"The idea of these nests came after planning and studying, and these towers were constructed. The project consists of 10 towers that will be distributed on the coast of Qatar and on some islands in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change," Al-Khulaifi noted.
He stated that the nest tower is 4 meters tall, as is the osprey platform, of which two were built for Qatar Environmental Day.
Al-Khulaifi said, "The rest will be installed later on the coasts of Qatar. This plan aims to support the sustainability of wildlife in Qatar. This project is my proposal and was approved by the ministry. These nests were made with appropriate designs for these birds. The reason is to breed this type of bird in Qatar."
