DOHA: The sixth edition of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Winter Camp will begin this week with the football and volleyball, officials said yesterday.
The January 11 to March 15 sports gala will be held every Friday with events like basketball, volleyball and football contested by participants who camp near Sealine Beach Resort.
The QOC has also announced prize money, fixing a handsome figure of QR 20,000 for the winners in each discipline.
The teams that finish in second spot will get a QR 15,000 while the third-placed side collects a prize of QR 10,000.
The rules and regulations of the events have been given to the registered sides, a QOC official said.
Abdulaziz Al Ghanem, chief co-ordinator of the football and volleyball competitions, said that some new terms were placed for participation in the championship, where the camp must has a licence, as well as a QR 3,000 payment should be paid as insurance for the participation.
Furthermore, the participation is exclusive for Qataris and Doha-Born expatriates.
According to Al Ghanem, each team will consist of 5 players and 3 reserves (football) and 6 players and 2 reserves (volleyball).
Car races, table tennis events and futsal championship are also part of the winter camp, the official added.
“There are tons of activities for the kids,” the official revealed.
“QOC has also made arrangements for family entertainment. This has been done to ensure families have a quality time during the winter camp,” the official said.
Sports fans can also follow the action on their Twitter account ‘@QOC_camp’. Last season, the QOC also organised Heritage Games Championship for Firjan (Areas) at its annual winter camp at Sealine Resort.
The Games brought together six teams from different areas (Firjan) across the country, including Dakhira, Old Airport, Northern Khalifa City, Duhail, Eastern Nuaijah and Al Wakrah.
Ishaq Al Hashimi, Head of Services and Events Support Unit at QOC, said at the time that the Games helped locals to revive their cultural heritage and traditions which are integral part of their history.
QOC, as a governing sport body, organises the camp annually in attempt to encourage the engagement of local community in various life activities including religious, cultural and sport programmes.
THE PENINSULA
