Doha: The Qatari Amiri Air Force carried out a night rescue operation from one of the northern platforms of Qatar Petroleum (QP) on Sunday to rescue 11 QP employees stranded on the platform due to bad weather conditions.

A Defence Ministry statement said that when they received a distress notification about the stranded employees on the northern platform, an Amiri Air Force helicopter was dispatched immediately from the Al-Udaid Air Force base for the rescue. They managed to shift 11 QP employees safely to Halul Island.

The rescue operation was carried out by AugustaWestland chopper, a multi-mission medical evacuation helicopter, the best in the world for such rescue operations, the ministry statement said.

UPDATE: Story was updated to add that they were taken to Halul Island
