World’s most venomous fish can be seen at Hamad Port Visitors Centre

Doha, Qatar: At the Hamad Port Visitors Centre located in Umm Al-Houl, one can witness the presence of the world’s most venomous fish, the Stnanceia verrucosa or most commonly known as Stonefish.

This formidable creature possesses a venom so potent that it can prove fatal to a human adult within a mere hour. The Stonefish boasts a combination of unique attributes commonly observed in other reef fish, making it a remarkable species to study.

Its most distinctive features include an extraordinary camouflage effect, which allows it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, and a venomous defence mechanism that is exceedingly painful and intended to protect the fish from even the most formidable predators. Tragically, if left untreated, the venom can prove lethal to a human adult within an hour of envenomation.

Treatment options, while challenging to access due to the specialised nature of antivenom, include administering heat, as it has been observed that exposing the affected area to hot water (40-45°C) can denature the Stonefish venom.

Drawing similarities to frogfish, the Stonefish adeptly blends into its surroundings with its camouflaged exterior, often taking residence among coral reefs. Their sedentary behaviour allows algae to grow on their bodies, further enhancing their ability to remain inconspicuous. Being ambush predators, Stonefish has a remarkable patience, waiting for hours until their prey ventures close enough to strike.

Their quick and powerful strikes, facilitated by large mouths and strong jaws, create a vacuum effect, allowing them to suck in and swallow their prey whole. Adding to their repertoire of remarkable traits, Stonefish possess the uncommon ability to survive for up to 24 hours outside the water. The Stonefish resides in an exhibit aquarium at the Hamad Port Visitors Centre, which has an impressive collection of over 80 fish and aquatic species. The centre serves as a purpose-built facility designed to showcase the maritime history and accomplishments of Qatar.

Visitors to the centre can explore a maritime museum, experience a 4D cinema, engage in virtual simulators, attend auditorium presentations, allow children to enjoy a dedicated play area, and marvel at the oceanic aquarium. For those interested in visiting, the facility operates from Saturday to Thursday, from 8am to 7pm, and on Friday, from 1pm to 7pm.
