The voter registration process for CMC elections concluded on Tuesday with over 8,000 citizens’ registering through the electoral constituencies and Metrash2.
The Supervisory Committee for the elections of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) said that the last day witnessed a large participation from citizens who got their names registered in the voters’ lists.
CMC Chairman Mohamed Hammoud Al Shafi said that the CMC will continue its sessions until June and the last session for the current CMC will be in June.
About the women candidacy in the sixth CMC elections this year, CMC Chairman expected a large participation from them despite that the nominations for elections not yet announced and the date of nomination will be announced by the Ministry of Interior.
“In my opinion, they have possibility to succeed and enter the CMC despite that their current presentation in the council is not big,” he said.
The Supervisory Committee for the elections said that the preliminary voters’ list will be announced on January 27, then citizen can check about their registration and anyone not seeing his/her name must visit the electoral constituencies.
Brigadier Salem Saqr Al Muraikhi, Director of Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry of Interior and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for the Elections of the CMC, stressed that the voters’ registration process was good and no negative notices were recorded.
He also praised the high turnout of voters in 29 constituencies to register their names, considering that it is evidence of the keenness of everyone to participate in these elections.
He said the Legal Committee is working in cooperation with the Technical Committee in terms of ensuring the safety of the models and meet all the requirements stipulated in the election law. The Committee also responds to all legal inquiries.
He said the reasons for submitting a complaint or appeal regarding electoral roll are limited on two grounds. The first if a citizen’s application is rejected without any reason or if the name of any person not meeting the legal criteria for registration is registered in the voters list.
Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, Member of the National Human Rights Committee, said recently that there is a plan to monitor the sixth session of CMC by forming a team which will be tasked to oversee the electoral process in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior.
