The Heart Centre at Sidra Medicine, which performs an average of 170 operations, has a shown a success rate of over 95%, which is comparable to programmes in the world.
The Heart Center features a comprehensive programme of services, with all the required elements needed to deliver best outcomes and safe quality care to children and adults with congenital heart defects, Professor Ziyad M Hijazi, Chair of Heart Centre, told The Peninsula.
“We offer surgical and medical care for essentially all paediatric (including neonates) congenital cardiac and acquired heart diseases along with the adult congenital heart disease. Our outcomes are comparable to any other western and North American mid or large size programmes,” he added.
Since its establishment, the Heart Center provides the perfect environment for complex patients from prenatal diagnosis to long term follow up in one place.
According to Prof. Hijazi, the number of patients seeking services at the Heart Center has increased especially from the region.
“Our Heart Centre deals with more complex cases and the interventional therapy we provide is the same or better than the programmes available at the leading facilities in the world. Due to high standards of care we provide, we are attracting more patients from the region, particularly from Kuwait,” he said.
Sidra Medicine is also one of the few children’s hospitals in the world with an airway stent service that is delivered through its Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Services at the Heart Centre include, interventional cardiology/cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, non-invasive cardiology, fetal cardiology, cardiac anaesthesiology, cardiac intensive care and perfusion.
According to Sidra Medicine’s annual report of 2021, the Heart Centre has performed over 150 heart operations with a success rate of over 95%. Number of admissions to the Cardiac ICU is 454 and number of procedures in Interventional Cardiac Labs (ICL) is 380. Also among the more than 90 international patients were treated at Sidra Medicine, 47 have sort treatment for cardiology problems.
In line with the multidisciplinary approach to care, the heart Centre at Sidra Medicine apply the latest techniques and work in collaboration with other specialtiies and experts to offer hybrid procedures.
