New York---Former NBA star Isiah Thomas' controversial bid to become a part owner of the Women's NBA New York Liberty has been suspended indefinitely, the club announced Monday.
Thomas, who won two NBA titles in 14 league seasons with the Detroit Pistons, was named president of the Liberty last month in a surprise New York return after a troubled tenure as an executive and coach of the New York Knicks.
The Hall of Fame guard was intended to have an ownership stake in the club, but that move required approval from the league owners, six of whom were named to a special committee earlier this month to evaluate Thomas' request.
A major issue was a sexual harassment lawsuit won by former Knicks team executive Anucha Browne Sanders that found Thomas at fault.
"After further discussion and with the season underway, the WNBA and the New York Liberty have agreed to suspend consideration of Isiah Thomas' application for an ownership interest in the Liberty until further notice," a joint statement from the team and league said. "The process will resume at a future time as determined by the Liberty."
Thomas said last month after his appointment that he has always maintained his innocence and has "moved on" from the sexual harassment incident.
