Doha, Qatar: Over 2.1 million passengers used the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks, since the beginning of AFC 2023 Asian Cup from January 12 to 21, 2024, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) announced.
“Our networks carried 2,164,211 passengers since the beginning of the AFC Asian Cup until the end of the second round, with 2,086,162 passengers using Doha Metro and 78,049 passengers using Lusail Tram, respectively. We welcome the Asian Cup 2023 fans onboard our networks,” said Qatar Rail on X platform.
The busiest stations during this period were Msheireb, Lusail QNB and DECC.
The metro provided connectivity to key event areas and attractions such as Souq Waqif, Lusail Boulevard, Katara, and Al Bidda Park, where the Expo 2023 Doha Exhibition is being held, directly connected to Al Bidda and Corniche stations on the Red Line.
Government Affairs & Stakeholder Director at Qatar Rail Rashid Al Shafi has highlighted the collaboration with government entities to ensure security readiness during the AFC Asian Cup 2023 tournament.
“Security is a top priority and a key pillar in our operation. Therefore, we work diligently with our partners and relevant entities to ensure the safety and security of all passengers across our networks throughout the Qatar 2023 Asian Cup. We are committed to providing a secure travel experience for the fans and visitors,” said Al Shafi.
Railway Systems Engineer Ahmed Abdelmajed briefed Qatar Rail’s strategy regarding signalling systems in the railway network and the improvements that have been made to them to ensure the quality of operational performance and provide the highest levels of reliability during the Championship.
“We have made several updates and upgrades to the systems by improving the system efficiency to assist the operator and provide more automated functions during normal operation and in case of any malfunction in the operation process,” said Abdelmajed.
For this tournament, Qatar Rail fully mobilized the entire fleet of 110 modern, comfortable, and secure Doha Metro trains.
