Doha: Spanish national Santiago Sánchez Cogedor, who started his epic walk from Madrid to Doha in January this year, hoping to reach Qatar in time for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on November 20, has gone missing.

According to media reports, Cogedor's family, friends, and thousands of followers on Instagram have not heard from him since October 2.

In his last post on October 1, from the last village in northern Iraq , he shared pictures of his day spent playing football with local kids and of being invited to eat with a family.

According to reports, he last shared a picture of himself near the Iraqi Kurdistan border with Iran, which is assumed to be the place where he went missing.

One of his closest friends and a spokesman for the family told the media that he shared his location every day with his group of closest friends and the last message shared was on October 2 at 12:30 Spain time.

On January 8, Cogedor began his journey on foot to Qatar from Alcala de Henares and shared frequent updates through video and pictures on his social media accounts.

His other close friend, Miguel Bergado, shared with El Mundo that the political turmoil in Iran could be one of the reasons for him, a foreigner, being retained by the authorities.

Reports also added that the Embassy of Spain in Iran is also trying to coordinate with authorities in the country to find the former paratrooper.
