DOHA: Seaport authorities have been given powers to auction imported consignments if not claimed by importers within 30 days of the arrival of ship.
The same rule will apply to  consignments due for export if they have reached the port but paperwork remains incomplete.
A law passed by Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Wednesday (Law No. 17 of 2015) amending some provisions of Law No. 29 of 1966 regulating seaports, gives the authority to Qatari seaport managements.  Perishable items unclaimed by importers can be sold by authorities in less than 30 days if they rot or get damaged or there is the fear that they may spoil other goods.
