DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality (MoM) has said that the green spaces reached o ver 18 million square meters, an increase of 2.3% in 2024 compared to 2023.
In its 2024 annual achievements report, the Ministry said that 840,000 trees were planted under ‘Plant 10 Million Tree’ initiative. Seven new parks opened in 2024, and the number of public parks reached 150 in Qatar.
“2024 was a distinguished journey during which the Ministry of Municipality had remarkable achievements in enhancing food security, digital transformation, improving the quality of life and well-being of the population, and humanising cities, in line with the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030,” Ministry said on X platform.
The Ministry of Municipality has made remarkable achievements in self-sufficiency in food production. With 950 productive farms, the organic farming area increased by 100% in 2024.
As many as 26 million kilogrammes of vegetables produced by local farms were sold in 2024, with the support of Mahaseel Company for Marketing and Agricultural Services. A total of 1,237 farms benefited from agricultural mechanization services provided by the Ministry. The number of livestock including sheep, goats, camels and cows reached 1.4 million heads.
In a landmark achievement, the Ministry of Municipality last week opened Rawdat Al Hamama Park with a capacity of 10,000 visitors per day, extending over a total area of 176,000 square meters and includes vast green spaces estimated at 138,000 square meters.
The park with the longest air-conditioned outdoor track in the world, 1,197 meters long, aims to encourage the public to jog and walk as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability and develop recreational infrastructure.
The Ministry of Municipality is increasing public parks and gardens, planting trees, and increasing green spaces in various regions of the country as a healthy and recreational outlet for citizens, residents, and visitors.
The projects aim at achieving the goals of sustainable environmental development, based on the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030) to reach Qatar National Vision 2030.
Over the past years, the Ministry of Municipality has launched a number of national initiatives to increase green spaces in the country.
The most important is the ‘Plant Ten Million Tree’ initiative, which aims to improve the quality of life in cities and achieve sustainable development.
The Public Services Affairs Sector of the Ministry of Municipality pays great attention to establishing new public parks and rehabilitating old and dilapidated ones to maintain them at the required level that the Ministry seeks to maintain and raise to meet international standards.
In addition to developing a strategic plan in coordination with the relevant authorities in the ministry that contributes to increasing green spaces and the number of parks in the country distributed across all municipalities in the coming years.
