Jockey Alberto Sanna guides Al Maqam to victory.
DOHA: Al Maqam, owned by Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari, claimed victory in the Baidda Algaa Cup as jockey Alberto Sanna grabbed spotlight with six victories at Al Rayyan Racecourse yesterday.
Starting from the rear in the 1700m Local Purebred Arabian Novice Plate feature, the unstoppable Sanna masterfully guided the five-year-old gelding to mid-position before unleashing a storming finish in the home straight to complete a treble for trainer Julian Smart in nine-race 27th Al Rayyan Race Meeting.
It was also a fine day for trainer Mohammed Ghazali with Sanna guiding four of his horses – Due To Dan (Thoroughbred Handicap 45-65), Duke Of Monlau (Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate), Torvar (Thoroughbred Handicap 55-75) and Saigon Dream (Thoroughbred Novice Plate) to victories. The trainer completed five wins on the day when Farhan stormed to victory in the Purebred Arabian Handicap 60-80 under Lukas Delozier.
Sanna also handed trainer Smart victory, leading Al Mutaghatris to win in the Local Purebred Arabian Handicap 55-75. Smart celebrated his first victory when Kera De Flauzins emerged winner in the Purebred Arabian Handicap 0-75 for Qatari riders with Abdelakrime Bendia in the saddle.
Meanwhile, Hamad Al Jehani-trained Silver Jubilee clinched Thoroughbred Handicap 70-90 under jockey Pierre Charles Boudot.
