Doha: Abdulla Al Tamimi of Qatar defeated Ammar Al Tamimi of Kuwait to win the 21st GCC squash championship in Riyadh Saudi Arabia yesterday.
In the final, Abdulla overcame a tough challenge from the tournament second seed Ammar winning in three games to one.
The Qatari won 11-9,11-9, 7-11,11-6 to put an end to the domination of the Kuwaiti player in the GCC championship.
Abdulla made history yesterday with his win over becoming the first non-Kuwaiti player to win the championship.
This is the first time, since 26 years when the event was inaugurated, the title goes to a non-Kuwaiti player.
Earlier in the first round, Abdulla beat compatriot Syed Azlan Qatar 3-0 and folowed it up by defeating the top seed Abdulla Al Muzayen of Kuwait 3-0 (11-8, 12-10, 11-9).
In the semi-final he defeated Youssif Nizar of Kuwait 3-0 (11-3,12-10,11-1).
After being crowned as the new champion Abdulla expressed his happiness and thanked Aspire for their support as well as Qatar Squash Federation and is hoping to work hard in 2015 to improve his world ranking.
In the team event Kuwait finished first while Qatar took the second place, Saudi Arabia third and Bahrain finished in fourth position.
Kuwait beat Qatar 2-1 with Abdulla beating Kuwait’s Ammar 3-0. Kuwait’s Al Muzayen beating Qatar’s Abdulrahman Al Malki 3-0. In the decisive match, Syed Azlan of Qatar lost in five to Salem Fayez of Kuwait.
