Doha: With the participation of nearly 2,000 medical and nursing staff from Qatar and abroad, Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) will organise a Thyroid Cancer Conference on April 19 and 20. The aim of the conference is to highlight the disease that has begun to spread more especially among women, and to know the causes of its spread. The conference will be held at The Ritz-Carlton hotel.

The two-day event will be organised under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

“Thyroid cancer is the second most common cancer in women in Qatar after breast cancer and also in Gulf. It is important to know the causes of the disease and the factors that increase its incidence among women,” said Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of QCS.

He also said during a press conference held yesterday to announce the conference that according to 2015 statistics in Qatar it showed that 73 people with thyroid cancer among them 53 women, which indicates that the number of women with the disease are more compared to men. About  the participants, he noted that: there are six speakers from Austria as well as from Arab countries such as Kuwait, Oman and others, adding that there are 34 papers to be submitted during the conference and to make important recommendations.

The chairman unveiled proposal from the Qatar Cancer Society for the health authorities in the State to launch a program for the early detection of thyroid cancer similar to the program of early detection of breast and bowel cancer.

For his part, Dr Abdul Azim Abdul Wahab Hussain, Vice Chairman of QCS spoke about the importance of the conference in highlighting thyroid cancer.

He said that a number of speakers from Qatar, whether from Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medicine or QCS, will present scientific papers on thyroid cancer with a review of figures and statistics on the spread of the disease in Qatar, the factors causing it and methods of early detection and treatment.

He added that early detection of thyroid cancer makes treatment much easier, hence QCS proposes periodic examinations for the early detection of the disease and therefore for easy examination, diagnosis and then treatment. Dr. Hussain said the conference will be preceded by workshops dedicated to medical and nursing staff in Qatar, which will be held almost two weeks before the event.
