A tender has already been floated to build an engineered landfill which is among top priorities of the Ministry of Municipality.
Doha: To protect the environment amid growing global threats of climate change, the Ministry of Municipality is working to build an engineered landfill for safe disposal of wastes.
The engineered landfill site will allow the final disposal of solid waste in a secure manner by minimising the impacts on the environment.
“A tender was floated to build an engineered landfill which is among top priorities of the Ministry,” Director of Waste Management and Recycling Department at the Ministry of Municipality Eng. Hamad Al Bahr told The Peninsula.
Speaking about the new projects of the Department, he said: “We have prepared a plan for this year and next year which includes a number of projects and initiatives including ‘Zero Waste’ which was launched in February this year.
He said that under the ‘Zero Waste’ initiative, the Ministry is providing support to companies working in recycling tyres.
“From next week, any company dealing with used tires will get QR250 per tonne for picking up used tyres from the site for recycling,” said Al Bahr adding that many such projects are under pipeline.
To a question about the efforts of the Ministry to build a circular economy in the country, he said: “We, in the Ministry, have been working for long in this regard. We are coordinating between facilities sorting out waste and factories for recycling operating in Al Afja area.”
He said that the national strategy is focusing on circular economy to utilise the waste in a better way as circular economy meant to take recyclable materials to recycling factories for utilising them completely.
Speaking about the strategy of the Ministry to deal with waste, he said that the strategy has been completed with the support of dedicated team of experts from the ministry and a consultancy firm.
“The strategy made seven recommendations including increasing awareness, development of waste transfer stations, enhancing sorting out operation, development of recycling factories and building such factories to utilise the waste in a better way,” said Al Bahr.
The strategic priorities to support the transition towards a circular economy in Qatar include reducing the generation of waste and promoting awareness about the environment, enhancing the waste sorting process at the source and enhancing the collection of all types of waste generated in the country.
Other priories are improving and promoting waste recycling and reducing landfills, capacity building and securing date, statistics and information in the field of waste management, improving governance and regulatory framework for waste management and improving the management of hazardous waste and healthcare waste.
