As many as 13 South Korean companies specialising in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will showcase their technologies and expertise with their Qatari counterparts on Wednesday at the first Qatar Korea ITS Roadshow.
The event will also be attended by delegates from the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) which are jointly organizing the event, and members of Korea Intelligent Transportation Systems Association (ITS Korea).
In an interview with The Peninsula yesterday, KOTRA Doha Director General Rakgon Kim (pictured) said the meeting in Qatar will feature the biggest ITS delegation from South Korea. He said some of the participating companies include Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), which is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of expressways in South Korea and a network of expressways internationally.
Other companies also include Korea Telecom (KT), which was founded 133 years ago and is one of the first telecommunications companies in the world to launch a nationwide commercial 5G wireless network, Hyundai Motors which is currently developing connected car technologies based on the 5G mobile network, LG CNS which is heavily involved in the Korean ITS project, and other SMEs specialising in ITS technologies.
Kim added: “So far, South Korea’s ITS technologies are now being implemented in 50 countries worldwide since 2006. Korean ITS technology is adopted not only by countries in North America and Europe, but we also have most of our projects heavily implemented in Asia and South America.
“As of June 2019, a total of about 156 global projects have been conducted including Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS), Automatic Traffic Enforcement (ATE), Automatic Fare Collection (AFC), Weigh in Motion (WIM), Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), and Parking Information System (PIS)”.
Kim went on to reiterate that the Korean government focuses on ITS to help commuters reach their destinations much faster and safer, while increasing life efficiency. He added: “Now with one card in Korea, we can use the metro, taxi, bus, railway, and even the convenience shop.
“We also have real time traffic information shared through mobile phones. The system is well connected. And in the future, we will further develop with the 5G technology. That means we can connect in real time and run autonomous cars. It’s all about mobility. Each of the transportation systems should be well-connected”.
