Doha: The final of the QSL Qatar Nations Cup has been decided after an exciting weekend of football.
Sudan sprung the shock of the tournament with a 3-0 win over Spain while France defeated Tunisia 2-1 to set up a great final.
The semi-finals – which were held at Al Wakra Sports Club – were the latest installment in what has been a great tournament so far.
Last month the Qatar Stars League launched the tournament as part of a new community football programme aimed at engaging all communities in Qatar.
In an exciting partnership with Qsports, experts in recreational sports and events, and supported by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, the QSL unveiled four new programmes to capture the imagination of both current and potential football fans throughout Qatar.
Speaking about the success and popularity of the tournament, Abdulrahman Al Dosari – Chief of Commerical for the QSL – admitted every aspect of the competition had lived up to his expectations.
He said: “When we launched our Community Programme recently, one of the key aims was to engage with people and inspire them to become more interested in football.
“I am glad to say the Qatar Nations Cup has done that. We have seen many people take part and enjoy the tournament, which has been wonderful to witness. There has been no shortage of passion and desire in the games played between the different communities. This has been very encouraging to see.
“Football is about respect, commitment and having the courage to develop as communities and individuals. We have a responsibility to help everyone in Qatar fulfil these qualities through football.
“The residents of Qatar are passionate about football. Our aim is to satisfy their needs – which is why we decided to use Al Wakra Sports club for the Qatar Nations Cup.
“Now we look forward to the semi-finals and the continued excitement and high-standard that has been on show up until this point.”
The final between Sudan and France and 3rd and 4th play-offs will now be held on March 30. The Peninsula
