Doha: A catastrophic fire on Monday gutted the great Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, destroying the roof, causing the steeple to collapse and leaving France and the entire world reeling with shock.
Twitter was abuzz with words of solidarity and personal memories about one of the greatest architectural treasures of the Western world.
In Qatar also, people, including many senior officials, were expressing their shock through Twitter.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani tweeted both in French and Arabic about the loss of one of France’s emblematic monuments.

“Our thoughts are with #France, with Government and people. For hundreds of years, #NotreDame was a symbol of creativity of the French nation. Yesterday, the world heritage has lost one of its most emblematic monuments,” Deputy Prime Minister tweeted.
HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, also tweeted her concern about the tragic fire.
“Heart breaking to see the #NotreDame cathedral on fire hoping the fire will be contained ASAP with least damage. My thoughts are with the people of #Paris,” she tweeted.

The Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lulwah Al Khater, remembered her first visit to the iconic structure.
“I still remember my first visit to #NotreDamedeParis , it was full of reverence for the beauty of that architectural jewel. We, in the State of Qatar, have received the catastrophic news with deep sorrow. Our hearts go out to France and its people,” she tweeted.
