Doha: DeBakey High School-Qatar has partnered with Best Buddies-Qatar to give students an opportunity to show a long-term commitment to their community, and reach out to individuals with intellectual disabilities who have traditionally been excluded from society.
An event was held at DeBakey High School-Qatar for high school students to interact and forge friendships with students from Shafallah and Step by Step students.
Separate events were organised for boys and girls. The day started with a welcome and introduction among students. Girls participated in arts and craft — decorating bottles with tissue papers, markers and stickers to create vases. The boys participated in sports like football and other games. Medals were handed out to students. The event concluded with refreshments, where all Best Buddies participants interacted and discussed their feelings on the day’s activities. Their thoughts were written on a unified board open to girls and boys to write along with their newly found ‘Best Buddy’. The event was designed with the theme, “They are just like you & me,” in an attempt to discourage the notion that children with disabilities want to be treated differently than other children.
DeBakey students were surprised with their own experiences, and shared their thoughts. “Being part of the organising team for this successful event was a big honour as it serves a cause based on kindness and social service,” said a student. “Everything felt so normal and I am glad we will be able to keep in touch after today”, said another.
“Education includes ensuring a well-rounded experience that promotes character development and social responsibility,” said Linda Mabrie, DeBakey Director.
