Sidra Medicine is preparing to host one of the largest global paediatric surgical conferences in November. Held for the first time in the Middle East, the 6th World Congress of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgery (WOFAPS 2019) is expected to bring together delegates and surgeons from all over the world.

The event will put the spotlight on Qatar’s own healthcare advancements, said Dr Mansour Ali, Chair of Surgery at Sidra Medicine, who is also the Co-Chair of the WOFAPS 2019 Organising Committee.

“Hosting the Congress for the first time in the Middle East is a crowning achievement for Qatar and Sidra Medicine. As Sidra Medicine we are emerging on the paediatric world stage and hosting WOFAPS will put us in a leading position among top hospitals internationally,” Dr Mansour Ali told The Peninsula.

“The Congress aims to cover both the most cutting edge advances in pediatric surgical care, as well as tackling the problem of how to deliver optimal care in resource-challenged settings,” he added.

WOFAPS 2019 will be held from November 1 to 3 under the theme ‘Moving Collaboration Education and Training Beyond Boundaries,’ and it will attract approximately 1000 participants including 100 surgeons from developing countries.

“The event promises to attract paediatric surgeons interested in learning about international paediatric cases as well as supporting surgeons from around the world to experience the pediatric innovations that have occurred around the globe,” said Dr Mansour Ali (pictured). “The program of WOFAPS 2019 is arranged around a comprehensive discussion of the problems in paediatric surgery. It includes pre-workshops, the main congress and post workshops – we have developed symposiums, seminars and workshops that will appeal to all our surgeons,” he added.

He emphasized the opportunity for surgeons coming from developing countries to meet and learn from the pioneers in pediatric surgery and take the knowledge back to their countries.

“WOFAPS 2019 will unite both new and experienced surgeons and give exclusive networking opportunities with experts from every aspect of paediatric surgery,” said Dr Mansour Ali.

The Congress will also shed light on Qatar’s best practices in paediatric surgery and updates about Sidra Medicine’s surgical milestones including renal transplant, twin separation, epilepsy and neuro surgery and others.

The WOFAPS 2019 has been accredited as a Group Learning Activity (Category 1) as defined by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners - Accreditation Department. The Accreditation has been approved for a maximum of 35 hours.

WOFAPS was founded in 1974 in Sao Paulo, Brazil during a Paediatric Surgery Congress with representatives from 43 Countries. WOFAPS has been conducting its ‘World Congress’ on a triennial basis since 2004. Previous events have been held in Washington D.C., Berlin, New Delhi, Buenos Aires and Zagreb.
