Doha: The Bangladeshi embassy observed the 40th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and National Mourning Day.
A day-long programme started with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast by Ambassador Syed Masud Mahmood Khundoker at the embassy in the presence of officials and a large number of nationals.
They observed silence for one minute as a mark of respect to Bangabandhu and the martyrs of August 15, 1975. Messages from the president, the prime minister, the foreign minister and the minister of state for foreign affairs were also read out.
During a discussion on Bangbandhu’s life and works, participants highlighted his contributions to Bangladesh and urged nationals to work wholeheartedly to fulfil his dream of a prosperous Bangladesh. They stressed the need for educating the younger generation about his life and works. Students of Bangladesh School also spoke about him.
In his speech, the ambassador recalled Bangabandhu’s role in Bangladesh’s emergence as an independent country. He said 15th August was the saddest chapter in the history of Bangladesh. “As a nation, we must learn a lesson — our mourning should be turned into our strength and we should work hard to fulfil the dream of the Father of the Nation — a golden Bengal.”
He thanked Bangladeshi expatriates for their contributions to nation-building to fulfil Bangabandhu’s dream and demonstrating unity, fraternity, and liberal and moderate attitudes which are characteristics of the Bengalis as a nation. A documentary on Bangabandhu’s life and works was also shown. The Peninsula
