Doha: The Ministry of Social Development and Family has amended the law many times to ensure the smooth operation of private associations and institutions in the country, said an official.

“The amendments gave a number of rights to private associations and institutions and their members to serve public interests in a better way,” said Director of Private Associations and Institutions Department at the Ministry, Naji Al Aji.

Speaking to Qatar TV, he said that first law No. 2 of 1974 to regulate Private Associations and Institutions in Qatar was issued demonstrating the will of the country to develop such associations.

“This law was amended several times as the last amendment was the Law No. 21 of 2020, one of the most advanced laws issued in GCC to regulate the private associations,” said Al Aji. He said that the Ministry had discussed with associations and sought proposals to amend the law and regulations to serve the associations in favour of public interests.

“The law was amended in a way to ensure a smooth operation of the associations as much as possible,” said Al Aji. He said that the amendments of the law include setting up a committee for election as a neutral body making the association prime responsible for it. "The law made mandatory for the association to announce publicly names of elected members within 90 days at the headquarters of the associations and on its website,” said Al Aji.

He said that the move aimed at bringing transparency in election process and satisfaction of the candidates.

“The members were also given a number of rights to participate actively in  meetings and activities of the association to serve the public interests,” said Al Aji.
